Researching Ways to
Prevent and Cure Neurodegenerative Diseases

We help people through
outreach, research, and development

The term Neurula denotes an embryo in the stage in which the nervous system develops in people. Basically, it represents the first moment that our nervous system is shaped, and therefore the moment that the ageing of the nervous system begins. Every event that happens thereafter has the potential of influencing one’s susceptibility to brain disorders, which are among the most serious health problems facing modern society.

Many of these disorders become more common with advancing age, including Alzheimer’s Disease, Frontotemporal Dementia, and many others. The burden of these neurodegenerative diseases is growing inexorably as the population ages, with enormous economic and human costs. Some neurodegenerative conditions, such as Huntington’s disease or familial Alzheimer's disease, have clear genetic causes. Others involve complex interactions of genetic and environmental influences that can affect the brain in many ways.

Our work at the Neurula spans the gamut from pharmacological and genetic studies on laboratory models to clinical studies on human patients. We are working to understand the brain mechanisms that promote the onset of diseases, how the brain changes its function in response to diseases, and how the brain responds to therapeutic interventions. The answers to these fundamental questions will form the foundation for new clinical treatments.

Not only do we seek to add years to life, but also life to years,
allowing individuals to age successfully and with dignity
